Conclusion of an essay

How to write a conclusion for an essay.

“Performance requirements”

            A way to write an effective essay is not only about its key idea or thesis statement but about its conclusion also. A conclusion is important just like introduction and body paragraphs of the essay. You put your thesis statement into the introduction section of your essay. Before that, you may write down an outline to structure your paper. Then, express supportive thoughts to make your thesis stronger in the body paragraphs. What is a conclusion in an essay? Conclusion is a concise summarizing of what was discussed in the essay. Try to make it memorable so a reader kept it in mind for a while after finishing reading the essay. It might be provoking, flourish verbally, catchy to cut it short. Look at it as if it was a dancing performance. You are a dancer on the paper. Your introduction is your entrance upon the stage, your body paragraphs are the dance itself and the conclusion is your graceful bend in the end.

conclusion essayJust like every performance needs to be announced about beforehand by means of mass media, make a “flier” of your essay conclusion with the help of transition. Lead your reader to a conclusion giving him/her a cue so they paid their attention to it. It is optional though if you believe it is clear enough that you are going to end your essay, then you surely may omit transition. Never begin your conclusion with the following transitions though – in conclusion, finally, in summary, to sum up, in the end… It works for presentations in the oral form though.

Each body paragraph has to begin with a topic sentence. What goes next should coincide with this sentence. Avoid confusing your reader no matter what section of the essay that is. Every piece of information needs to flow like water – nicely, smoothly, and logically. The water will never run the other way if only you point it that way by hand. Try the following, take these topics sentences and rewrite them dividing into two or three sentences. Do not summarize what you write. You will do it later, in conclusion section. Avoid overloading with information though in your conclusion. A few sentences up to the point will be enough. Approximately it should be from 5 to 7 sentences in total. If you make it less, you risk giving not enough of conclusion. If you make more, you risk again because it might be too much. The golden mean is always better.

Do not forget to emphasize your thesis statement once again with your conclusion. Keep it in mind that your thesis is what you stand for in your essay and if there is no thesis in the essay, it is completely lost. Your readers will be lost as well because it is not interesting at all to read a pointless text. Do not copy past it; use different words to express it saving the meaning.

Make your paper sound authoritative providing with arguments, facts, statistics, and figures so it was not based only on your suppositions but it should not sound as if you are trying to impose your point of view on a matter discussed. A thoughtful reader will always hand down an opinion. If it is a conclusion for an argumentative essay you are about to write, make sure, you have valid arguments in your essay to summarize it correctly. Make sure the reader knows why the chosen topic is important. If that is a persuasive essay, your purpose is to persuade your reader and if you manage to change his/her mind on the matter, – congratulations, you have succeeded. It may be a narrative essay, and then all you need is a good narration of the story so you did not put your reader to sleep unless to create a land of nod was your intention originally. For compare and contrast essay conclusion, make sure you pointed out both similarities along with differences of the two matters compared. A descriptive essay might be your assignment too. Get ready to describe and make it sound entertaining to capture your reader`s attention so he/she could hardly take their eyes off your essay, sitting with their mouths open in amusement at times, keeping the image of what they have read in their heads, right in front of their eyes summarized in the conclusion. You might need an expository essay and writing its conclusion, do not be afraid to repeat the importance of the topic you picked. To your own surprise, you may become an essay conclusion generator. Writing is just like reading is a self-discovering process. There are so many topics in this world to be written about. You may select any of them in case you have enough interest, knowledge and facts to share. Whether it is poverty, leadership, gun control, global warming, abortion, obesity, Romeo and Juliet essay after all. Love matter is eternal. Some might disagree though 🙂

No apology is needed when you express your thoughts by means of an essay. Avoid saying things like “I am not good enough at it” or “I have not much of an experience in this area”. Readers should feel strength in what you write even though you might think your opinion is rather humble.

Irony is acceptable to end your essay with. Play with the last sentence of yours. It will give a provocative touch. Include emotions instead of making your essay rational. This way you will put heart into its “chest”. If your purpose is to change a person`s opinion, call to action would be suitable for the occasion. Use it reasonably though. It will not work for expository and/or argumentative kinds of essay.

Do NOT put quotes or analysis into conclusions. This is what body paragraphs are for. You may summarize the quotes neatly relating them back to former matter.

NO fluffy language is allowed. It should be easy to read, interesting and related to the discussed matter. Do NOT bookmarks the points you make. Make it clear without numbering.

Think BIG J Focus on the hairstyle, not just a strand of hair.

If it is formal writing and there were no instructions from your teacher, do NOT use shortenings like “don`t” and can`t”. Also, avoid using the first person manner of speech for formal writing. It will make it sound unprofessional. The third person manner of speech is appropriate in most cases.

Checking upon mistakes is advisable. A lot is actually at stake when it comes to conclusion of your essay just because it is your final chance as a writer to persuade and/or impress your reader with your writing. The impression you make with your conclusion will create a shape of the impression from reading. Ask yourself what is the importance of your findings, whether there are any limitations to the approach you suggested, if there are some other relevant factors that influence the theme but happen to be beyond the scope of your essay, maybe there are any more suggestions, which could become applicable in doing researches in future. Do not hesitate putting questions in to make your reader think but do not make a question out of your thesis statement.

There is a game, which is called “So what?” Involve your friend or someone whose opinion you value. Ask this person to look at your paper with a fresh eye. “So what” strategy will help you to have a look at your paper from a different angle.

Here are a few examples of what a good conclusion contains:

  • Rephrase the matter;
  • Summarizing the key ideas;
  • The opinion of an author;
  • Future outlook on the matter in case it changes or continues.

A tastefully done last sentence is able to leave your reader with something to think about. You might even end up with an anecdote. But no rhetorical questions. An essay without a conclusion is like an unwrapped present. Wrap it up so it was complete and was joyful. how to conclude an essay
